Cricket Bat Care & Maintenance
Initial Preparation - Oiling
Proper oiling is essential for bat performance and longevity. Use only raw linseed oil.
- Apply a light coat of oil to the face, edges, toe, and back using a soft rag.
- If the bat has an anti-scuff cover, only oil the exposed areas.
- Place the bat horizontally and leave to dry for 12-24 hours.
- Apply second and third coats, leaving 12-24 hours between each coat.
- Avoid over-oiling as this can make the willow spongy.
Knocking In Process
Essential to compact the bat fibres and prepare for match use. Never rush this process.
- Start gently with a wooden bat mallet on the face and edges.
- Gradually increase power over 2-3 hours of knocking in sessions.
- Round off the edges carefully; do not hit them square on.
- Progress to using a ball-on-a-stick mallet for realistic impact.
- Test with close catching practice before match use.
Ongoing Maintenance
- Re-oil if you notice dryness or damage.
- Sand out minor damage before re-oiling.
- Store bats away from damp, extreme heat, and direct sunlight.
